But one of the main reasons I love them is that they always have new and fun products to choose from. And who knows the best TJ’s products better than your employees? That’s why when I heard that Trader Joe’s recently hosted a recipe contest with crew members, I had to dig out the winning recipes and try one.

Happi Foodi Sweet Potato Casserole, 11 Oz (frozen)

In June, Trader Joe’s crew members across the US were challenged to create simple and spectacular recipes using no more than five TJ products. And last week, three winners, plus an honorable mention, were announced.

Obviously, I had to try one of the dishes right away and I chose the sweet potato frosting. Was it partly because I already had some of the ingredients at home? It is possible.

Since the sweet potatoes only required five ingredients, I had already mentally approved this recipe long before I started cooking. But when I realized how simple the steps were, I liked it even more.

Baked Japanese Sweet Potatoes With Miso Tahini Butter

The result was a dish that reminded me a lot of the classic Thanksgiving sweet potato casserole, but with a Tunisian twist. It had the crunch of the pecans and the sweetness of the maple syrup – it just lacked some marshmallow, but I could have lived without it. The sweet potato had a not-so-subtle kick from the harissa, just a PSA for those with an aversion to spice or young children, but the overall flavor was delicious and well-balanced. Nothing like comfort food to get you through the coldest parts. Winter fries and cheese? How can Trader Joe’s One Potato Two Potato go wrong?

As always, the package includes microwave and conventional oven heating instructions. I chose the latter because I was feeling less lazy than usual – New Year’s with good habits to forget and all. The instructions simply say, “Remove the wrapper,” but don’t specify whether the tray containing the dish is “bakeable,” a term Trader Joe’s prep instructions have used in the past. I figured it was definitely oven safe, and as evidenced by the fact that the pan didn’t burn while baking at 350° for nearly an hour, I figured I made the right choice. Plus, if there wasn’t a tray, the veggies and cheese would be spread all over the tray and maybe a little too toasty.

What’s working here: Lots of big, firm vegetables, flavorful, evenly distributed cheese, a crispy, crunchy outer layer, and an overall salty, savory flavor that’s perfect for a winter meal. The potato wedges and the places where the cheese has browned a little around the edges are my favorite elements of this dish.

Roasted Turkey & Sweet Potato Burrito

What doesn’t work here: Too many sweet potatoes, which I initially mistook for carrot slices. Strangely, they bothered me more than the mushrooms. While I’ve never been a fan of ‘mushrooms’, there just wasn’t enough to bother me here. Sonia really wanted to be more.

The sweet potato wedges were plentiful and huge. They should call this Trader Joe’s One Sweet Potato Two Sweet Potatoes, although I don’t know of any nursery rhymes that involve counting sweet potatoes. I usually don’t mind sweet potatoes at all, especially if they are well cooked. However, I think this selection had a weird, almost spongy texture and the pieces were just too big. In my opinion, there were a lot more sweet potatoes than regular potatoes. So…I wouldn’t have minded more regular fries, peas instead of mushrooms, and thicker, crunchier cheese.

Still, despite one or two distinct weaknesses, this potato dish is a winner in my book. The general effect does not suffer much from an excess of sweet potatoes; There are still some tasty bites to be had. $3.99 for four servings.
