MAKING THE POTATO POTATO The sweet potato stew is made by combining sweet potato puree with eggs, milk, sugar, butter and vanilla extract and topped with a mixture of brown sugar, butter and pecans. The pot is baked in the oven for 35 minutes. See below for detailed recipe instructions.
SHOULD I USE FRESH OR CANNED SWEET POTATOES FOR THE POTATO? There is much debate about whether canned sweet potatoes are a good substitute for fresh sweet potatoes in a sweet potato casserole. My opinion is that fresh sweet potato puree is best and should be used for this recipe!
CAN CANCELLATION PRODUCE ONE DAY’S ADVANTAGE? Yes, the sweet potato casserole can be prepared in advance. Prepare the pan without the brown sugar coating, cover and refrigerate. Refrigerate the brown sugar crust separately. When you’re ready to bake, take it out of the fridge and let it sit on the counter for 15 minutes before covering with brown sugar and baking according to the instructions below.

The Best Thanksgiving Brown Sugar Pecan Sweet Potato Casserole Recipe
2. Boil the sweet potatoes until cooked. You can bake them in the oven, peel them and boil or cook them in your pressure cooker.
3. In a large bowl, mix the cooked sweet potatoes, melted butter, milk, sugar, vanilla extract and eggs. Beat with a hand mixer until smooth. Spread the mixture in the baking dish.
4. Pulse the brown sugar and flour in a food processor until combined. Cut the butter into pieces and add to the food processor. Blend until the mixture is crumbly and comes in pea-sized pieces of butter. (See image above). Add the chopped walnuts. Spread the nut mixture evenly over the sweet potatoes.

Brown sugar pecans are the ideal addition to this sweet potato favorite! I love a little crunch and these tasty nuts go perfectly with soft, creamy sweet potatoes. Unlike our southern friends, I don’t make sweet potato casseroles any time of the year except Thanksgiving or Christmas, so they look extra special in November and December. I love sweet potatoes and the holidays are the perfect time to put them together with butter, cream and sugar.

Sweet Potato Casserole With Butter Pecan Crumble Topping
This is one of my favorite Thanksgiving side dishes and has been featured at my family’s Thanksgiving dinner for many years. This classic Southern recipe starts with soft roasted sweet potatoes with butter and cinnamon and topped with crunchy brown sugar and nut butter.
The sweet potatoes are fried soft and fluffy, and the crunchy filling makes them irresistible. I’ve never really understood why this isn’t dessert, but both are acceptable.
There are several ways to bake sweet potatoes, but the easiest way for me is to bake them in the oven like a regular baked potato. This concentrates the flavor and you can make it ahead of time if needed.
Sweet Potato Casserole Traditional/paleo
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Set aside.
Dry with paper towels. And place it on the prepared baking sheet. Pierce each potato several times with a fork (to prevent the potato from exploding in the oven).
Remove from the oven and let cool. Open to cool if using immediately; about 30 minutes.
Sweet Potato Casserole
When the potatoes have cooled, remove the skin from the sweet potatoes and place them in a large bowl. Discard the skins. Mash the potatoes by hand or using a potato masher.
Using an electric mixer, blend the potatoes on low speed until they begin to soften. Add sugar, eggs, half and half, condensed milk, melted butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla and salt. Mix well until smooth.
Grease an 8×8 inch pan with butter. Pour the sweet potato mixture into the pan and spread in an even layer. Set aside.
Easy Sweet Potato Casserole — Salt & Baker
In a separate bowl, add brown sugar, flour and walnuts. Stir the mixture into the melted butter with a fork and break up any large lumps.
I once brought this casserole to a company pattluck and they ate it. My colleagues complimented me a lot. I was thrilled that everyone enjoyed it so much.
